At Spotwork, we wanted to change the way that people find work, by connecting companies with workers without having to go through staffing agencies. For the those looking for work, the advantages are being paid faster, and building a digital resume as you work. For employers, time is saved by not needing to recruit and interview candidates, plus there is no need for pay roll reductions.
The SPOT App features both a sign in for workers to apply for jobs, and a separate sign in for employers to select and hire workers. However, it only existed as a mobile application, and the feedback we received from the employers was that they would like a desktop version to increase hiring efficiency. It would also give employers the versatility of using SPOT on either their phone or computer.
My team’s task was to create a web version that closely mirrored the mobile counterpart, while enhancing the user experience where possible. This is the endeavor we undertook.
A modern solution for modern work: Spotwork Web Portal Design

In this case, the user in question are the employers. Listed below were the most common requests voiced in their feedback:
timesheets for keeping track of hours that workers have completed, with a tally for each day and each month, sortable. And with this function, to be able to export the data onto an excel sheet
a reporting section for past, ongoing, and future jobs, workers who were absent, and the ability to see the reports on a weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly basis
see who has checked in in real time
removing applicants if they are no longer needed, and favoriting workers that they liked
User feedback
With the feedback our users gave on hand, it was time to brainstorm solutions. We chose to use a red route matrix to determine critical tasks and frequently used functions. This method also avoids scope creep:
a separate dedicated button for “create a gig” as it is the most frequently used function on the app
sidebar with subsections for navigation, including gigs (jobs) and applicants, finances, profile, messages, timesheets, and reviews
allow the employer to add other employees to the profile
Solutions
Wireframing
With the main ideas in mind, we began creating the first wireframes and low fidelity designs.
High fidelity designs
After trying out numerous iterations of different page layouts in our low fidelity wireframes, we moved onto fleshing them out and turning them into high fidelity designs. Another aspect that we focused on was the impact of colour and font. As the majority of the users for the web portal will be an older demographic, it was important that everything was easy to locate, and the verbiage simple enough for everyone to understand, regardless of their familiarity with technology.
